About Us
The Second Mile, founded in 1977 in State College, Pennsylvania, is a statewide,
nonprofit organization for children who need additional support and who
would benefit from positive human contact.

The Second Mile challenges young people to achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing opportunities for them to develop positive life skills and self-esteem as well as by providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth.

Programs & Services
With free prevention and early intervention programs as well as community-based
services, The Second Mile goes the distance to help kids develop self-confidence
while they learn strategies and skills that will lead them to a future
of promise and possibility.
- Prevention
Effective prevention programs provide strategies that significantly influence children's behavior and skills through hands-on education, positive role models, and skill-building activities.
- Early Intervention
The Second Mile’s early intervention programs provide support to children identified as needing extra support by teachers and counselors.
- Community-Based
These programs are designed to address the needs of those children who live in the most difficult circumstances and have experienced the greatest trauma.
- Professional & Community
Education
Not only is The Second Mile dedicated serving the youth of Pennsylvania, a major part of our mission is our commitment "to providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth."
Ways to Give
The Second Mile relies solely on private funding to develop and sustain
our programs and services.
- Outright Gifts
Outright Gifts are the easiest and most direct way to give to The Second Mile and are fully deductible for individuals who itemize on their federal income tax return.
- Planned Giving
When you support The Second Mile through planned giving, you can choose from a number of convenient ways to make a gift.
- Support Opportunities
Donors can assure their support applies to specific programs through named scholarships and Challenge Program residential weeks.
- Recognition Societies
Membership in the Second Mile's Arthur C.and Evelyn M. Sandusky Society is offered to all individuals who have made an irrevocable estate provision for The Second Mile, or a planned or deferred gift commitment.

Each year at our Challenge Program residential weeks we are in need of many supplies to carry out our activities and enrich our children's experience.

Get Involved
Thanks to volunteers filling an array of roles, The Second Mile provides help and hope to more than 100,000 children each year.
- Volunteer Opportunities
Serving as a mentor in the Friend Program or assisting with Challenge Program registration, sharing the impact of The Second Mile with a potential donor or serving as a golf course marshal during a fundraiser, volunteering on a committee or providing support in the office - volunteers are the lifeblood of The Second Mile.

The Second Mile offers internships in each of our three organizational areas as well as across all three of our offices.

Chapters & Affiliates
There are currently seven chapters and two affiliates across the state of Pennsylvania.
- Central Region
The Central region of the state has two chapters; one that serves Clinton County and parts of Lycoming County, and one that serves Clearfield county.
- Northeast Region
The Northeast region of the state has one chapter that serves both Lackawana and Luzerne counties.
- Southcentral Region
The Southcentral region of the state has three chapters serving Berks, Lancaster,and York counties.
- Southeast Region
The Southeast region has one chapter serving the Lehigh Valley region, and an affiliate serving Chester County.
- Student Chapters
There is currently one student chapter serving Penn State’s University Park campus.
Our Team
Our board and staff members are dedicated individuals committed to fulfilling our mission of Providing Children with Help and Hope.
