Launching Young Leaders
The Second Mile Leadership Institute is unique in its approach to youth leadership development. Through formalized training at our annual four-day conference and through year-round supervised support by The Second Mile and a faculty mentor, we channel the energy, talents, and resources of young people to assume leadership roles in their communities. Through a curriculum that supports skill-building and community service and provides opportunities for concrete action planning, young people leave the Institute with the potential to work for intergroup harmony within their high schools and to be involved citizens in their communities.
Nominations
Dedicated to promoting youth voice and building this set of leadership competencies for the long term, the Institute serves high school students who attend the conference in teams comprised of five students, along with a teacher, counselor, administrator, or other selected adult mentor. To maximize the potential to build an atmosphere of inclusion and connection within schools and communities, we ask each high school to nominate a team of sophomores that serves as a cross-sectional representation of the diversity of its student body:
- Selecting both male and female students, as well as students from under-represented populations and
- Choosing youth demonstrating a range of leadership skills, from the most rudimentary to highly developed.
With the exception of transportation to and from the Institute, The Second Mile underwrites all costs associated with participation.
