Early Intervention: Friend
Information for College Students
The Second Mile is preparing for another year of enjoyable activities through the Friend Program and would like to invite you to become involved. If you participated in last year's activities, then you are familiar with how The Second Mile's Friend Program operates. For those of you not familiar, the Friend Program was developed to provide children with the opportunity to interact with positive role models.
As a "College Friend" we ask that you participate in our large group activities (see the tentative calendar in your area). At these activities, you can meet, interact with, and befriend many children from this area. As you meet these youngsters, you may form a special one-to-one relationship with a particular child. You may really "hit it off" with one particular child; you may notice a kid who seems to need a special friend; or a staff member or volunteer may suggest a child who seems to need extra attention. At each event, you and this special Young Friend can talk, laugh, and enjoy the activities together. Spending time with the same child or small group of children is most rewarding, for you'll see the child (and your relationship) grow over the course of the year. The adult volunteers at the events will help you establish this kind of one-on-one relationship.
In the past, we required each Young Friend to establish two goals for the year. We will ask you to help your Young Friend write three goals - one academic, one behavior and one community service goal. Together, Second Mile Staff and College Friends will provide encouragement, feedback, and follow-up to help them reach their goals.
Some of you may choose to meet with your Young Friend more frequently than we meet in a large group. If you would like this kind of one-to-one relationship, let us know and we can work out such an arrangement. Of course, those of you who already have a special Young Friend will continue to receive our support in continuing your relationship.
The registration form includes an information sheet and release forms. Please complete the forms and return them to The Second Mile. You will then be on our mailing list to receive announcements prior to each event.
Your commitment is important. We ask that you ARRIVE 30 MINUTES EARLY TO EACH EVENT so that you can sign in, receive directions, and maximize your time with the kids. You will be contacted with dates and times for MANDATORY orientation in September.
Showing these children that you care through your attendance and friendship has a significant impact on their lives. If you are interested in becoming a College Friend please print, fill out, and return the College Friend Registration Form that corresponds with your school.
