Professional & Community Education
Not only is The Second Mile dedicated to serving the youth of Pennsylvania, a major part of our mission is our commitment "to providing education and support for parents and professionals addressing the needs of youth."
Many of our programs have adult education components. For example, we offer program-specific training and support to the following groups who help us with our prevention, early intervention, and/or community-based services programs:
- Leadership Institute: Faculty mentors
receive training and support to assist them in fulfilling their responsibilities
to the high school students they mentor;
- Friend Program: College Friends receive
periodic training to assist them in meeting the needs of their Young Friends;
- Friend Fitness Program: Fitness Mentors
are provided with quarterly training to assist them with skills needed
to support students in their workouts, to guide students in meeting academic
goals, and to better understand and respond to their emotional and psychosocial
needs; and
- Summer Challenge Camps: Camp counselors
are required to participate in intensive preparation, helping them to better
meet the needs of their young campers.
Periodically, The Second Mile sponsors programs designed to address the needs of parents and community members, as well as those of youth service professionals. Programs may relate directly to implementation of existing Second Mile programs (such as educator in-services in use of our PEAK Program materials), or they may simply provide education and support to adults helping youth succeed (such as Mentoring trainings).
Pennsylvania certified educators will be pleased to know that The Second Mile is currently an Approved Provider of Act 48 hours for continuing professional education.
