Internship Opportunities: Development
Development internships are available in the fall, spring, and summer in State office (State College, PA).
Compensation
All internships are unpaid. We ask that interns choose The Second
Mile solely for the gratification of helping children and for the
acquisition of professional experience. Your willingness to intern
without financial compensation enables us to funnel more resources
into our programs, to serve better and more of the Commonwealth's
children.
Schedule Both full-time and part-time internships are available. Full-time internships usually involve working Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as well as providing occasional evening or weekend hours during a special event. The work schedules of part-time interns will vary according to office needs and the interns' class schedules.
Duties Development internships include both administrative and creative duties relating to special events and donor solicitation. Assignments will primarily revolve around coordinating and planning special events including: advertising, sponsorship coordination, event logistics, invitation and program design and production, registration, food and beverage coordination, accommodations, and various other duties. No experience is required in any particular area, but basic computer skills and excellent communication skills are required. Due to space constraints in all offices, interns may share a work area with other development interns, as well as interns working in programming or communications. Access to a vehicle is not a requirement, but is helpful. However, if transportation is an issue, the office is located near a bus stop.
The Second Mile development staff views the professional development of interns
as critical to our mission and our effectiveness. A number of our
current professional staff are former interns, and their internship
performance was key to their employment offer. Our expectations
are high. We expect interns to conduct themselves professionally
as "junior" members of staff. The workload at The Second Mile is
large, as is the demand in any effective human service program,
and we frequently work long hours to complete all the tasks necessary
to provide quality programming for the children. As you approach
the finish line with one task, there will always be another assignment
awaiting your attention. Your satisfaction needs to come from knowing
that your work is making a difference and from working with a positive,
goal-focused, and committed team. If that work ethic and maturity
sounds like you, we welcome you to send a cover letter and resumé to our office.
