History
Jerry Sandusky once dreamed of helping Pennsylvania's children achieve their potential as individuals and community members by providing them with opportunities to develop self-esteem. In 1977, that dream was realized with the founding of The Second Mile.
In its first year, The Second Mile helped 45 State College children. Now,
The Second Mile provides its nine prevention, early intervention, and community-based programs and services to more than 100,000 Pennsylvania children annually.
The Second Mile programs and services are provided free to all Pennsylvania children. There is no dependency or reliance on federal, state, or county funding to provide programming. Private support comes from the Commonwealth and beyond through individuals, businesses and corporations, foundations, clubs and organizations, and through special event sponsorship contributions.
